About the SSS

Strategic Vision

The SSS presents its strategic vision for 2024-2028, highlighting its mission to promote statistical methods, literacy, and excellence across Switzerland and beyond. This comes in the context of increasing data use, digital transformation, and the growing role of algorithms and artificial intelligence. Our strategic vision focuses on four key goals:

  • Professional networking, to foster national and international collaboration among statisticians;
  • Statistical and data literacy, to broaden and strengthen understanding of statistics among the public and professionals;
  • Statistics as a discipline, to support the recognition and development of statistical science;
  • Efficient management, to ensure the Society remains a sustainable and effective organization.

Each goal is described in detail here: https://osf.io/4kgu9/, including objectives, ongoing activities, and ideas for future development.

History

The SSS was founded on January 29, 1988, under the name "Schweizerische Vereinigung für Statistik (SVS)". In its first year, it counted about 100 members. This number increased steadily to 230 in 1998. In autumn of that year, the Section of Official Statistics was founded. This led to a sudden increase to about 350 individual members and to the inclusion of corporate members. In spring 2000, the name of the association was changed to society. In autumn 2000, the first Swiss Statistical Meeting with support by the SSS took place in St. Gallen. Now such meetings are held yearly.

In 2003, the two sections Business and Industry and Education and Research were founded. In spring 2003 and 2004, respectively, the Swiss Statistical Society became a member of the Swiss Academy of Exact Sciences (Schw. Akademie für Naturwissenschaften) and associated member of the Swiss Academy of Human Sciences (Schw. Akademie für Geistes- und Sozialwissenschaften).
